Scholarship Fund Set Up as Loving Tribute to His Late Wife

Ralph and Becky Pernice

Before Rollins, Becky and I knew each other from our hometown in Greenfield, Indiana. Because she was a top student in high school, Rollins awarded her an academic scholarship. She arrived on campus in 1950, during my junior year.

We both loved our college experience. Great faculty inspired us to work hard, and the Florida sunshine inspired us to play hard. Some of Becky’s favorite memories of Rollins were singing in the chapel choir and having great times with her Kappa Alpha Theta sisters. I remember those years fondly, too, because our relationship grew—we married after I graduated.

Becky and I went on to have meaningful careers and two wonderful children. I credit the liberal arts education we received at Rollins for building a foundation for our success and our appreciation of lifelong learning. Becky passed away over a year ago, and I decided to establish a scholarship in her memory. I hope this scholarship inspires other students from the places Becky and I called home to embrace a top liberal arts education at Rollins.

Ralph Pernice ’52 established The Rebecca Strickland Pernice ’54 Memorial Scholarship Fund as a loving tribute to his late wife. The new expendable gift of $250,000 partially funded by a gift from an IRA will provide financial support to two high-performing undergraduate scholars per year.
